All bad behavior needs to be corrected. At Atkinson Family Services, we believe all behaviors fall under three rules: be safe, be respectful, and do your job . The family or group home sits down together and decides what those three rules mean in their home, assign the consequences for breaking those rules, and assign what privileges shall be given to those children who follow the rules. Then, nightly, the parents or staff sit down with the children and evaluate how the day went and how well the family solved their problems.
If we can remember that all children have some behaviors that are not okay, and forget about setting blame we can more easily correct the problem. All problem solving should make things better. If the adults and children involved can leave yelling, blame, judgmental language and name-calling out, things will be better for all.
Happy problem solving!
