For this activity, we hand out 4 pieces of colored cellophane.
The first filter is the Sensory Filter, and we place the blue cellophane over these words. This is where we first come into contact with the information all around us.We know it exists, but we haven't processed it well enough to know if it is usable information or not.
The second filter is the Total Knowledge Filter. We place the green cellophane over these words. Here we begin to evaluate what the information is. We compare the new information to what we already know; if it is familiar and useful, we move it along in the process. If not, we just discard it as not relevant.
The third filter is the Valuing Filter. We place the yellow or red filter over this work. Now we can decide if it satisfies one of the five basic needs or not. If it matches a picture in our Quality World it is given a positive value and the yellow filter is used. If the information does not satisfy our needs, there is a frustration and the red filter is used.
More about how the brain uses the information around us later.
