Consistency in family meetings is important so that you don't go back to old ways and end up yelling and threatening again. Although it is difficult to stay consistent, the peace it will bring to your family is worth it.
Once everyone is clear about the three rules; safety, respect and do your job, with several family meetings you can easily set rules and consequences. The great thing about family rules and consequences is that when everyone knows what is expected and what to expect, working things out is a mostly reasonable process. Again, if you have a foster child, or add new step children to your family it will take time to make the rules and consequences known again. You will also have to work on the trust element and consistency again.
